Border Terriers
The best description of a Border Terrier is a “big” dog in a small body. This a dog with a big heart and an even bigger personality. But beware – the Border Terrier is a proper terrier and as such often has a strong prey drive.
It is often said that the Border is a man’s dog outdoors but a lady’s dog indoors. He will be happiest with his owner, be it outside doing whatever task is needed but more than happy to sleep curled up in front of a warm fire, or better still on your lap or right by your side. He loves human companionship above all else (bar possibly food).
They have the appearance and character to be a rough and tough little dog but underneath that harsh, wiry coat lies a sensitive soul that can easily be offended or driven into a sulk just by raising your voice.
Do not be fooled, this dog DOES need proper exercise. He can be satisfied with a moderate walk in an urban setting but to keep him happy and healthy should ideally get a good run regularly in an open environment.
The Border Terrier is a greedy breed, almost without exception. As a result, they are frequently seen overweight as a direct result of the owners overfeeding them. They really do not need much food. The lean BT is generally a healthier dog.
The coat needs a moderate amount of grooming despite its somewhat scruffy and natural appearance. The wire topcoat needs to be fully hand stripped (no clippers, no scissors) every six months. This is best done by an experienced Border Terrier owner/breeder as many dog grooming parlours will only partially hand strip the coat.
A final word of “warning” – Border Terriers, due to their adoring personality and kind temperament, are very collectible. It is almost impossible to just have one! And once you have been loved and owned by a BT, you will never want to be without one… or two.
